Are there any dangerous animals in Guadeloupe?
What are the dangerous animals in Guadeloupe?
Introduction
There are no truly dangerous animals in Guadeloupe. In any case, none of them are considered deadly or dangerous to humans.
However, being in a tropical climate, it is best to be careful with certain species.
The different species found in Guadeloupe
The Mosquito
There are many species of mosquitoes in Guadeloupe. Their bites, always inflicted by females, can transmit diseases and germs. Mosquitoes are known to be the primary vector of serious tropical diseases such as malaria, chikungunya, and dengue fever.
Good reflexes
Mosquitoes dislike air conditioning and drafts. We recommend setting your air conditioning to just 1 or 2 degrees Celsius lower than the room temperature at night; this is enough to keep them away. Another technique is to place a fan under the table during meals, and that should do the trick.
If not, there are still classic protections like 5/5 tropical for the body (pharmacies) and incense coils.
One last piece of advice: avoid dark-colored clothing; they love it.
The centipede
The centipede is a millipede. It can bite you severely if it feels threatened. In France, it is found around the Mediterranean and in tropical areas, particularly Guadeloupe and Martinique.
Its bite can be very painful, especially that of tropical species, sometimes causing swelling and even skin necrosis around the bite. In Guadeloupe, it is not fatal and will only cause pain.
Good reflexes
In case of a bite, wash the wound with soap and water and disinfect it with an antiseptic such as Hexomedine. It is also advisable to consult a doctor so they can prescribe pain relievers and corticosteroids.
To limit the risks, do not walk barefoot, eliminate organic waste and avoid wet areas.
The Snakes
There are mainly 2 varieties of snake in Guadeloupe, both harmless to humans.
First, there are the grass snakes, such as the large grass snake and the small racer, both of which are protected. They are timid and will flee at your approach.
And finally, the Typhlops, burrowing snakes: they hide underground to escape predators. They are blind, and the probability of seeing one is very low.
Good reflexes
These animals are protected and harmless; if you come across one, observe it and let it continue on its way.
Spiders
Guadeloupe has more than 150 different species of spiders. All are harmless to humans.
So there's nothing to fear. The Soufrière tarantula (2 cm) is certainly the most impressive; it's not very widespread, it's discreet, and you'll only come across it in remote forests.
Good reflexes
These animals are protected and harmless; if you come across one, observe it and let it continue on its way.
The Iguanas
In Guadeloupe, two breeds of iguanas coexist; this vegetarian animal has a rather prehistoric appearance and is harmless to humans; the only risk is getting hit by its tail if you bother it.
Among these 2 species we will find the common iguana or hybrid iguana, there are all sizes and it is found everywhere, it is recognized by its green color and the zebra stripes on its tail.
The second species is the Iguana delicatissima, which is endemic to the Antilles and is protected. Rather dark in color, it is mainly found on Petite Terre and La Désirade, and is endangered, its main predator being the common iguana.
Good reflexes
These animals are protected and harmless; if you come across them, observe them from a distance and let them continue on their way.
In conclusion
The risks are very limited and prevention and protection are the key words.
Guadeloupe is not populated by dangerous animals like Martinique or French Guiana.

Want to enjoy Guadeloupe's nature safely...
In Guadeloupe, there are no animal species on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. However, there are some threatened species, such as birds and certain reptiles. Guadeloupe does not have a list classifying threatened species in the Antilles, nor does it have a list of dangerous animals. Birds, reptiles, or marine or terrestrial mammals are not present in Guadeloupe. Some anemic species are threatened and are classified as red on the list, unlike the spiny plants of the Antilles or Europe. Snakes, sharks, or venomous fish are not present in Guadeloupe's waters. The most threatened red animal is a bird that eats vegetation on the beaches at night; this species exists only on the mainland of the Antilles. What are the dangerous animals in Guadeloupe from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, as well as the terrestrial flora and birds on the beaches of Martinique? No species capable of causing vascular problems. The fauna and flora of Guadeloupe, both marine and terrestrial, include reptiles, insects that pose a health risk, and fish with spines, which remain on the diving red list. Species with spikes or legs are among the animals found in Martinique and Pointe-à-Pitre, as well as terrestrial reptiles.
