Deshaies, an authentic village
Deshaies is one of the most charming villages in Guadeloupe, located in the north of Basse-Terre. A fishing village, with its old Creole houses lined up on either side of its two main streets, it has managed to preserve its calm and authenticity.
Nestled at the back of a bay on the Leeward Coast , Deshaies is caressed by the trade winds. Shops line the main street where you can find everything you need: a mini-market, bakery, pharmacy, fruit and vegetable vendors, restaurants, bars, etc.
A pretty traditional white West Indian church is located in the heart of the village and you can go to mass every Sunday morning to hear the melodious hymns.
Next to the church is the police station from the series " Death in Paradise " "recurring filming location of the cult series Death in Paradise.
North of the village lies Gros Morne, at the foot of which lies the magnificent cemetery laid out according to Antillean traditions with its black and white checkered tiles. A little further on, you can reach one of the most beautiful beaches on Basse-Terre: Grande Anse, and then Plage de la Perle .
To the south you will find the remains of the artillery battery that was meant to protect Deshaies from the English (also called Pointe Batterie ), and not far away the Botanical Garden, former home of Coluche.
