Deshaies, an authentic village
Deshaies an authentic village
Deshaies is one of the most charming villages of Guadeloupe located in the north of Basse Terre. A fishing village, with its old Creole houses lined up on either side of its two main streets, it has managed to preserve its calm and authenticity.
Nestled at the bottom of a bay, on the Sous-le-Vent coast , Deshaies is lulled by the trade winds. Shops line the main street where you can find everything you need: mini-market, bakery, pharmacy, fruit and vegetable sellers, restaurants, bars, ...
A pretty traditional West Indian white church is located in the heart of the village and you can go to mass every Sunday morning to hear the melodious songs.
Next to the church is the police station of the series “ Meurtre au Paradis ” ( Death in Paradise ) which has just started filming for season 11.
North of the village you will find the Gros Morne with at its foot the magnificent cemetery made according to West Indian traditions with its black and white checkered tiles. If you push a little further you can reach one of the most beautiful beaches in Basse Terre: Grande Anse and then the Plage de la Perle .
To the south are the remains of the artillery battery to protect Deshaies from the English (also called Pointe Batterie ), and not far away the Botanical Garden , former home of Coluche.
